A MALAYSIAN'S DEEPAVALI EXPERIENCE
Design: Patrick Ho
As a Malaysian Chinese, it is quite surprising that I have a passion and weakness for Indian food.
Hahaha... even my Indian friends insist that I am half-Indian!!!
I just cannot resist a good veetu thosai, masala dosa, ulundu or uddin vadai in the morning everytime I walk past a South Indian restaurant.
That happened recently when I was scheduled to attend a reunion for RMAF's retirees and friends in Brickfields.
So, before I headed for the Vogue Club for lunch and camaraderie with our brave heroes, I stopped by Nu Sentral Mall to soak in the Deepavali atmosphere.
It was exactly a week before the Festival of Lights, and boy was I energized by the vibes and colour at Nu Sentral.
But the main thing was to search for a place to film my Deepavali video for my YouTube channel. (Click the link to watch: https://youtu.be/e_SPMd5r4IU?si=ePYgUFuLjszETQpe )
There are so many good Indian restaurants in Brickfields. Without a doubt.
But which one should I try? Sub-consciously, I was worried of being disappointed.
Which one should I go for my favourite breakfast? After all, a delicious thosai must be complemented by a delicious coconut chutney and dhal or sambar.
Otherwise, the meal will not be fulfilling, to say the least.
Lady luck was shining on me as I found MTR 1924 ( https://mtr1924malaysia.com/ ).
Better yet, I discovered that the establishment received a 'Michelin Bib Gourmand' award listing this year ( https://guide.michelin.com/my/en/kuala-lumpur-region/kuala-lumpur/restaurant/mtr-1924 ). Congratulations and well done to the owners and staff!
I was grateful that I managed to get the last available table around 10.30am.
The well-designed menu was full of information and the photos were good quality. I was impressed, and getting very excited to start the food tasting session!!!
I eventually ordered the signature Masala Dosa and my lifetime favourite, the Uddin Vadai.
Words cannot describe the satisfying and mind-blowing tastes and textures with every bite, with every chew.
Please watch the video to see how good the quality of the food was.
The next day, I headed for The Gardens Mall to film the beautiful Deepavali decoration there.
This has to be the most elaborate and beautiful design concept that I have ever seen in my life!
My family and I also had a nice meal at Bananabro. It may not be the best banana leaf rice place, but for me, it settled my cravings and love for Indian rice.
Do you love Indian food as much as me?
