A QUIET RAYA IN MELAKA
Is the lack of traffic jams in Melaka a sign of the times?
Returned to Melaka (Malacca) a few days before the start of Hari Raya Aidilfitri to avoid the balik kampung crawl.
Driving around town over the next few days, I could not help but notice many "TO LET/FOR RENT" signs on many shop lots in leading commercial areas.
The other thing I noticed was the low traffic, even when I visited the normally busy Jonker Walk "tourist trap".
But thank to the small crowds, I managed to enjoy my favourite Char Kway Kak (Watch my YouTube Shorts Video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Old89DDEi1A )
So, is the economy bad?
I would say yes.
Why? Because since last year, the consultancy business for me has been slow to say the least.
The golf clubs did not invest in the South Korean Smartscore scoring solutions, therefore I am no longer attached with them after my contract ended.
Having said that, there are also some outstanding consultancy payments pending from clients.
Even my clients are having a hard time collecting payments.
BUT WHY IS THE ECONOMY SO BAD?
Is it because of Donald Trump? Is it because major foreign investors have moved away from Malaysia?
Here's my list of what could be the factors affecting Malaysia's economy:
- The constant change of ruling parties and PM's
- A lack of spending on creative brand education (Not everything happens digitally)
- Not investing more in qualified staff (Yes, our service and hospitality industry sucks!)
- Poor communications with consumers
- Tourists moving away to other countries (Why do we need to copy Thailand and create a floating market in a Melaka river?)
What is certain though is how can we generate business and employment when no one is spending?
I was told many companies have frozen advertising and promotions budgets.
Why not publicize your products and business in a bad economy? This is the best time to exploit the situation, especially when your competitors are not advertising.
Advertising, promotions and branding should never stop. More so in today's digital world.
While many companies are investing heavily in digital marketing, and getting lost in cyberspace at the same time, I would advise to spend your budget on "on-the-ground" events.
Afterall, we humans were born with senses. Let them feel your product, listen to a qualified sales promoter about your company's history and brand story.
So, how do you tell a story of success?
There are many more strategies which I can assist your brand story with. For a consultancy appointment, please email me at: golfpaths6@gmail.com
