My job routine starts when I wake up.
Thanks in part to the inventors of smart devices.
It's so easy isn't it?
There is no standard checklist but it's more habit.
A social media check starts things off, followed by email communications.
Most of the time, this sets the tone for the rest of my day.
Hence, this blog post.
A new PR (or MEDIA RELATIONS) company had a staff bug me for the past month for a PDF copy of news published in the magazine that I work for.
There are countless others too, and its worst when there wasn't any face to face meetings with these PR "practitioners" before.
Before I go on, like some of my peers, I have dabbled in PR work before.
And, I have had the privilege of learning from some of the legends of the trade.
Some have become great friends too.
Coming back to the 'PDF' copy of published articles (for billing purposes)...
My question to this, or these kind of, 'PR' company is, "why can't you subscribe to copies of publications that you know are crucial to your client's public relations/communications campaigns?
You guys need to bill your client for work done, right?"
Wait...! Your client only places ads in my competitors' titles but not mine.
PR mistakes are there to be made.
But not learning from them will only paint the wrong image of the practice.
MY FAVOURITE PR BLUNDERS
1. Not meeting the editor/reporters in person.
2. Calling a publication only to get the title wrong.
3. Not finding out the editor's name before making a phone call.
4. Getting your facts wrong in a press release.
5. Calling 10 times if the news will be published. (At least ask us about the weather!)
6. Emailing 10 times if we are attending your client's event.
7. Being a yes-man to your client. (You should remain the PR strategist, not them)
8. Send long-winded, shiok sendiri press releases. (Yes, Penang char kue teow is the best, but which is authentic?!)
9. Not changing/moving with the times.
10. Trying to "entice" a publication to attend your events with the promise of a door gift in return.
